RICH TRAINERS – Know Honesty Pays!
Have you ever had a question asked to you from a client or a potential client even worse, and you didn’t know the
answer, yet you just made something up?
News flash - people and your clients are smart, never underestimate that. If you BS them, sooner or later that will come back to haunt you. So why are trainers dishonest then?
Ego’s run rapid in the fitness profession, and any show of weakness in most trainers mind will be the beginning of the end, so they think. If I don’t know the answer they will not hire me or leave me, is the normal way of thinking for a trainer.
Dishonesty Drains the Spirit and the Wallet
Any form of dishonesty drains your spirit and in the end your wallet as well. You don’t feel good about yourself not telling the truth or half truth for that matter. Over time, you lose confidence in yourself not even realizing it. That will spill over into your performance and that can and will cost you money. Let alone disrespect the person you are dishonest toward.
The Best Policy for Cash
The Best Policy for cash is to show respect to others and yourself. If you don’t know an answer, say you don’t know. Then tell them you will find that answer out within a day. Get back too them with it.
The Reality of Truth Telling
People don’t expect you to know everything, but they do expect honesty. In the end that makes you look like you care even more, you respect yourself and the other party respects you too. This policy will make you cash in the end and build better self esteem in all people.
It shows strength not weakness!
TRAINER DUDE RULE #27 - Dishonesty brings strife and poverty to your heart and business. No matter what, tell your clients the truth, you owe them at least that. Your increase in income will show.
RICH TRAINERS –Know the “One’ thing that separates the Wealthy from the Poor!”
There is only one thing that separates a Rich Trainer from a Poor one, do you know what that is? The answer is the same for, “Why is there only a small percentage of the population wealthy? If it were easy, then every trainer and every person in America would have loads of cash. But they don’t, you don’t. Why? Rich trainers or wealthy people realize that creating and keeping money comes down to,
How you THINK, more than how you DO things!
I read articles all the time and counsel thousands of trainers, and the majority of things discussed are,
“What’s the secret program, marketing tool, pricing structure or niche to making a lot of cash as a trainer?” My answer is, “There is none, at least in those areas you are speaking of.” Then they stare at me, with a glazed look on their face.” Then I explain, money is not in the numbers on the charts or plans on a marketing campaign.
Here are a few things to think about if you want to be Rich,
Rich Trainers believe: “I create my life.” Poor trainers believe: “Life happens to me.”
Rich trainers think big. Poor trainers think small.
Rich trainers focus on opportunities. Poor trainers focus on obstacles.
Rich trainers admire other rich and successful trainers. Poor trainers resent rich and successful trainers.
Rich trainers associate with positive, successful trainers. Poor trainers associate with negative or unsuccessful trainers.
Rich trainers are bigger than their problems. Poor trainers are smaller than their problems.
Rich trainers choose to get paid based on results. Poor trainers choose to get paid based on time.
Rich trainers think “both”. Poor trainers think “Me!”
Rich trainers focus on their net worth. Poor trainers focus on their working income.
Rich trainers act in spite of fear. Poor trainers let fear stop them.
Rich trainers constantly learn and grow. Poor trainers think they already know
Rich trainers live in Gratitude, Poor Trainers die by living in lack of everything.
RICH TRAINERS-Know It’s Not about Volume – Five Ways to Improve Client Retention!
Quality Orientations with Psychology Questionnaires
My orientations are between one and two hours in length; and I talk the least of all. My goal- gather information, process it and form the approach. The orientation is about them, not you. Health History, policies and procedures, and most importantly a “What to Expect,” sheet must be gone over. Get the facts, set your business boundaries and make them feel comfortable with you, but at the same time let them know, “Game On!”
Client retention is about results and people skills, period! The more you know how they tic the faster the results, it’s just that simple. One size does NOT fit all in exercise prescription. If you are a book worm with no people skills, forget it; client retention will not be your strong suit.
A Weekly Follow -Up System
A very famous trainer in Hollywood once told me the best way to keep clients is, to never allow four days with out connecting with them, preferably by phone, not text or email. This is a relationship business, not an x and o business. Connect or get disconnected!
Educate, Encourage and Evaluate
People what to be educated then encouraged; figure out a good balance for each client and ride the wave for a few weeks. Set evaluation periods as carrots for motivation or keep them just too yourself, but evaluate just the same every six weeks or so.
Accountability at All Cost
Client retention comes down to the “Accountability Principle.” You practice it, you keep clients, you don’t you lose them; it’s just that simple. Unfortunately, it’s the hardest of all things for a trainer to do and follow through with. You have to have guts, faith and foresight, or you will crack under pressure. Clients want you to hold them accountable, they may not like it, but they want it and need it. If you don’t hold them to it, you are doing them a disservice.
Empower By Not Enabling
With Accountability comes empowerment inside of them and you as well. If you enable or do these for them, or let them off the hook you are reinforcing their lack of effort. In the end all you are doing is hurting their self- esteem. Tough love in fitness training is required. The surprising thing is, the more you do this, the longer they stay.
RICH TRAINERS – Understand Proper Planning Pays!
Do you have a five year plan? Have you ever thought about what path you want to take in your job, career or even life?
Or, like most fitness trainers, are you just trying to get through, today? Twenty-five years ago I wrote down what I would be doing at this time in my life. I specifically wrote down,
“Leveraging my time, money and expertise, in a way were I can make money anywhere, anytime and wearing anything.”
I am writing this post on my deck, cup of coffee in hand and listening to the birds. Each one of us right now has no worries; we know we will continue to eat and reap rewards, why? We knew many years ago we would be here, because we planned it and acted on our plan.
Proper Planning Pays
It’s not just a hand written exercise to keep in your drawer to on occasion pull out and wipe the dust off of. Planning your career before it happens is a vital key to IT happening.
Benefits of Planning
1. Makes you take your profession more seriously.
2. Encourages you to believe in what you are doing better.
3. Helps problem solve before one happens.
4. When a major decision comes up to which way you should take your business, your plan makes the hard ones, easier.
5. Saves time and energy on a daily basis.
6. Keeps less drama around.
If you don’t know where you are going, how can you look back and see where you’ve been?
Why is it so hard for you to plan ahead and write down you vision?
FEAR OF COMMITMENT
FEAR OF FAILURE
FEAR OF SUCCESS
FEAR OF RIDICULE
All of these are illusions made up in your own head. Get over them and start planning out your future!
RICH TRAINERS- Know How Gym Owners Think?
If you are just starting out or been in the fitness training business for any length of time you are or have worked in a gym.
Each gym has its own rules and policies for trainers. Some allow outside subcontractors to come in a rent their facilities, and others only hire trainers and pay them an hourly fee.
The gym experience is vital to a trainer no matter what their long term goals maybe. However if you are eventually going to build wealth, then a gym owner telling you what to do or how much you are worth is not the way to do it. But while you are there, do the best you can and appreciate the opportunity you have been given.
Owners are Circus Performers
In any business, the bottom line IS the bottom line. Gym owners are in the business to make money, it's all about profit margins; cash flow to expenses. So when it comes to trainers owners walk a tight rope and balance much.
The goal for the owner is to get a trainer that does not increase their liability insurance, by being safe with the members. Second they hope, at least in the short term that the trainer is not there primarily for taking members too other facilities to train; something an owner can not prevent anyway. In the end the gym owner, knows that the trainers stay at his facility is short lived at best. So with all that said,
“What should you do and how should you act, while employed at that facility?
On Job Training- OJT
Your stay there should be all about experience to add to your long term plan. If you are serious, about a career, every day is a building block. Learn the business, and how it works. Observe the behind the scenes stuff of what it takes to run a gym. Educate yourself on
People
Most importantly, learn and document every client experience you work with. One of the benefits of working in a gym even for a short time is you get to meet and possibly work with a variety of personality types; great people experience.
Professionalism
Always, and I mean always be professional. Treat your work, the staff and facility like it was your very own. You are a brand and you need to represent your brand with the utmost set of standards. No matter if you are employed or self employed show professionalism. My past boss, “Kathy Smith,” yes thee Kathy Smith once said to me, “You are always on stage.” In other words, someone is always watching you.
Again, at the end of the day, every day, care like you own the place!
